How is this possible?  Snowmaking Technology...

It all started in 1950 when Ski manufacturer Wayne Pierce took a paint spray compressor, a nozzle, and a garden hose and got a patent for the first snow-making equipment in the world.

A snowgun mixes compressed air with streams of water to create crystals of frozen water, which hit the ground as snow. This fantastic ski technology is appreciated every year in New Hampshire at fourteen alpine ski areas which every year, open earlier than nature allows and without much benefit of natural snow. Most ski areas in New Hampshire have more than 70 percent of their trails covered by snow-making pipes which run up the sides of the hills.       

The temperature is a huge factor in making snow, you can make more snow when the temps are in the teens than you can when it is in the low 30's. To stage a manufactured blizzard is part science, part art form, it’s gone through many evolutions but is still the same product made of all natural ingredients: water and compressed air flung into the cold atmosphere. The compressed air essentially atomizes the streams of water jetting from the machine into an atmosphere of freezing ambient air. The droplets of water form into crystals of frozen water before they hit the ground - that is how you make snow. There are fans, there are hoses and guns, there are aerial towers, but essentially the process is the same when you have freezing temperatures. The 2007-2008 season is just around the corner, thanks in most part, to snow making.
